| Established under the authorization of the minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. As a membership organization, where a member firm has an established business affiliation with the listed commodity, the Members’ General Meeting is the highest organ at the Exchange. Day-to-day businesses at the Exchange are attended by the Board of directors, headed by the Chairman, all elected by the members at the Members’ General Meeting. For advisory purposes, permanent and ad hoc committees are instituted under the Board. |
| The Exchange lists Futures Trading and Options Trading. Futures Trading is a contract to buy or sell an underlying commodity at a specified price, on a specified future date. At the specified future date, the seller must deliver the underlying commodity to the buyer to settle the transaction and the buyer is required to pay the specified price to receive the underlying commodity. However, before the specified future date, the futures contract can be closed out or offset; that is, prior to delivery, the buyer offsets futures contract by selling the contract and the seller closes out futures contract by buying back the contract. A contract can be settled with a cash payment in the amount of profit or loss, i.e. the price difference between initiating and canceling contract. This is called cash settlement and is one of the unique features of futures trading. Settlement of most futures contract is made by cash settlement rather than the physical delivery of commodity. |
Futures online trading |
Online trading systems |
| Electronic futures trading has changed the brokerage landscape forever. It is now possible for a trader to participate in the market with a better edge than he or she had before electronic trading. This does not mean that the risk is less, it is the same; rather, today's futures trader, in the electronic markets, can see what is out there. The question of "where is the paper" is no longer a secret. Today's trader can now see the trading book where all the buys and sells are shown. One can see how many are bid and offered at a given price. But the most significant change is speed. Electronic futures trading is click and trade. The trader sees the bid and hits it. |

tures from the video shoot for my three-part series on learning to trade sponsored by the CME
What an amazing experience!
Last week, we shot a three-part video series on learning to trade sponsored by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. I read my script from a teleprompter, was filmed on two cameras while wearing makeup. The entire video was taped in a studio in front of an infinity wall. For a young guy from Indianapolis, this was pretty heady stuff.
The three videos cover:
Part One: Getting started - My theory of trading and three setups I like
Part Two: Developing your trading plan
Part Three: The why and how of using a trading simulator
The CME contracted 7th Wave Communications, a world-renowned video production company, to produce the videos. Thanks to the CME’s desire to produce a series of videos with the highest production values and Seventh Wave’s expertise, the three videos will very likely be the most professional futures training videos made to date.
For me, this was the experience of a lifetime. Thanks to Brain Burkhart and John Timmerman from 7th Wave and John Conolly, Paul Hayward, Bob Guardi and Liam Smith from the CME, along with my partner and wife, Toni, we have created something special that will set a new standard for professionalism in trader training. I am proud to have been part of it.
The videos are set to be released in late March or early April.

because of the industry’s association with the shady ‘bucket shop’ business in the 80s and 90s. ‘Bucket-shops’, now illegal, are businesses which con investors into investing in commodities products with them, often resulting in big losses for the clients. While many retail clients are not familiar with Futures, banks have long been using these financial products to hedge their interest rates exposure and mercharts, farmers have been using commodities futures to hedge against crop price fluctuations. In fact, the first futures exchange (Chicago Board of Trade) started in 150 years ago in 1848.
CBOT trading pit - open outcry
However, as many exchanges operate on a open outcry system until recent years, the futures market was rather inaccessible to retail clients who do not have the trading size. Orders had to be placed via the phone to the dealing room, who will then pass the orders to the trading floor. Fills were often bad and delayed. Clients often do not have instant prices as price feeds were expensive, and news were slow to reach the retail investors. On top of that, service was poor as brokers tend to give priority to bigger clients.
Electronic Trading
With the change in technology, most futures contracts are now traded electronically which means that retail clients can now have direct access to the exchange with a click of the mouse. Price feeds, placing of orders and fills are all instantanous. So it no longer matters whether you are only trading 1-2 lots or 5000 lots, all orders go through a fair and transparent Q-ing system and stand an equal chance.
With the internet and cable TV, retail clients can also have fast and easy access to news and market information, putting them on a level playing field with the big boys.

ACRES OFDIAMONDS
Acres of Diamonds was the title of a speech given over 5,000 times by Russell Crowell between 1900 and 1925.
The speech was very popular and Crowell was paid to give the speech all over the United States. He used the proceeds from giving the speech to provide tuition for over 1,400 students to attend what became Temple University in Philadelphia.
